With kids home for the summer, vintage garden furniture catching the rays and #BeachSelfies prompting jealousy on our Twitter feeds, Vernon Building Society explores why the summer high life should be enjoyed with the peace of mind provided by individually tailored buildings & contents insurance.

Our data indicates that almost half of all claims are made during the period July to October, of which nearly 40% are due to theft and accidental damage. “With the kids off school, the opportunity for accidental damage can increase significantly; spillages, stray footballs and toppling TV’s are a common source of insurance claims. Accidental damage is not included in all insurance policies and therefore it’s worth reviewing the details of your own policy” said Mandy Torkington, our Senior Customer Service Manager.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) estimates that there were 710,000 thefts from the garden in the period July 2013 to June 2014. “Gardens are a soft target and sheds can easily be broken into. It is also not unheard of for expensive garden trees and newly turfed lawns to be taken by thieves – anything with value is a potential target for the opportunist. Unfortunately, many individuals only consider insuring this risk following a theft,” advised Mandy.

Personal items are also at risk of going astray over the summer period. “It’s not rare for holidaymakers to lose their engagement ring on the beach or have their phone pickpocketed at a street café. Regularly review your policy to ensure that it remains appropriate to your individual circumstances,” said Mandy.
